In 2009 Broward County along with Miami Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties endorsed the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact (Compact). The compact establishes a collaboration framework to address climate change and is intended to serve a national model for cities and counties across the US. The language of the Compact includes development of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Action Plan that contains measures to reduce GHG emissions and coordinated preparation for and adaptation to sea level rise. The Compact was ratified by January 2010 via ordinance by each county commission.
Outcome of the Compact can be anticipated to result in incorporating climate change considerations into the planning process. In short term, different work groups are providing recommendations for regional coordinated approaches to address vulnerabilities, devise strategies for mitigation and adaptation to the long term impacts of climate change upon land uses, transportation, and the built environment. The 3rd Annual Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit was held in Key Largo on Dec. 8-9, 2011. This summit featured a release of the draft SE Florida Regional Climate Action Plan, several informative technical and policy sessions and a workshop on Energy Financing (PACE-type) programs.
