BCC Briefs for June 5, 2018

At the June 5, 2018, Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board took the following action:

In memoriam – observed a moment of silence in honor of Connie Kurtz of West Palm Beach, a pioneering gay rights advocate who passed away on May 27 at age 81.

Risk shelters – approved amendments to contracts with five financially assisted agencies to provide licensed mental health professionals to individuals and/or families housed in evacuation risk shelters during a state of emergency. Mental health providers, paramedics, nurses and certified nursing assistants make up a strike team that will activate when the county's general population evacuation risk shelters are activated.

Fire Rescue – approved on first reading and to advertise for public hearing on June 19 an ordinance authorizing a special assessment to fund charges billed to the county by Riviera Beach for rental and maintenance of fire hydrants serving properties located in unincorporated areas of the city

ACTS – adopted a resolution authorizing the issuance of up to $55 million in revenue bonds by the Palm Beach County Health Facilities Authority for ACTS Retirement-Life Communities, Inc. The bonds are to refinance all or a portion of a revolving line of credit issued by Bank of America to the ACTS corporation and to finance three new projects in Boca Raton. No county funds, its taxing power, faith or credit are involved.

CareerSource – approved a FY 2018-2019 budget of $14.489 million for CareerSource Palm Beach County and approved a waiver from the Statutory Individual Training Account (ITA) requirement. CareerSource services include the design, coordination, and implementation of the local workforce development system for Palm Beach County.

NACo Awards – recognized county staff for earning a total of 18 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards for innovative programs, projects and initiatives. Winning departments are Community Services (2); Environmental Resources Management (2); Fire Rescue; Housing and Economic Sustainability; Information Systems Services (5); Library; Palm Tran; Public Safety and Youth Services (4).

Transportation – appointed Commissioner Hal Valeche to replace outgoing Commissioner Steven Abrams on the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority.

Environmental Appeals – approved the appointment of Trevor Rosencrans, P.E. and Telsula Morgan, Esq. to fill two vacant seats on the Environmental Appeals Board.

Small Business Assistance – approved the appointment of Lorna Anderson to fill a vacant seat on the Small Business Assistance Committee.
