At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on April 2, 2024, Commissioner Weiss presented a proclamation declaring April 2024 as Drowning Prevention Awareness Month in Palm Beach County. Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1 through 4 in South Florida. During fiscal year 2023, the Drowning Prevention Coalition provided 393 water safety/drowning prevention activity/education programs of which nearly 31,500 Palm Beach County residents benefited. Through community action and organizational partnerships, promoting the importance of water safety and swimming lessons via education, Palm Beach County can achieve the goal of zero preventable drownings.
