Cooperative Extension Service
Promotes Handwashing to
Combat the H1N1 Flu Virus

Handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as the H1N1 flu virus. Proper handwashing is easy to learn. The Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service, in collaboration with the school district and other community partners, is conducting handwashing demonstrations county-wide, in an effort to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus. To date, more than 2,136 students and adults have participated in handwashing exercises.

To schedule a handwashing demonstration activity in your organization or business, please call the Cooperative Extension Service, Family and Consumer Sciences
at 561-233-1742.

Nourishing Communities
One Vegetable Garden at a Time

How captivated are county residents with vegetable gardening?  Very!

Commissioner Koons kicked off the Cooperative Extension Service’s Nourishing Communities; One Vegetable Garden at a Time Workshop, recently.  The all day program attracted more than 200 participants, with three hundred more on a waiting list.  The workshop incorporated two concurrent tracks ~ one for home gardeners and the other for community gardeners.

Cooperative Extension Service drew heavily on its own expertise for presenters, along with guest speakers from around the state.  Topics included Organizing and Managing Community Garden Volunteers; Incorporating Herbs into Your Garden; Rain Barrels; Soil Preparation; Food Safety and Vermiculture (worms!).

The Department has worked hard in responding to the extraordinary groundswell of interest in home and community gardening.  Its expertise in commercial and home vegetable growing, food safety, nutrition, pest management, volunteer organizing, along with dynamic displays in the Mounts Botanical Garden, all have helped the community gain a better understanding of vegetable gardening.

One attendee commented “This is the best vegetable workshop I’ve attended.”  Another attendee indicated “The community gardening section was just what we needed!”  Surveys indicated 95% of participants rated this workshop better than satisfactory and all but one indicated they intend to plant a vegetable garden.

For more information on vegetable gardening or food safety, contact the Department’s Master Gardener Hotline at 561.233.1750 or email  mgarden@pbcgov.org.
