Condo Gardening Tips

April 2005

By Gene Joyner, Extension Agent
Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service

This month we’re having another field day so if you missed the first Condo Field Day last month try to attend this one which will be held on Thursday, April 14, at Water Glades Condominium on Singer Island on the ocean from 9 to 11 a.m.

These programs are great opportunities to walk through condo grounds looking at landscape problems and get solutions on how to correct these. If you want information on the Condo Field Day, you can call me at 233-1754. This is a great opportunity also to bring board members or landscape personnel to get them familiar with the problems associated with condominium grounds.

Remember that in May we’ll be having our Condominium Short Course on Thursday, May 19, all day here at the West Palm Beach Extension office. You should be getting a mailing around the end of April or the first week in May on this and if you don’t receive something and need CEU’s please contact me and I can send you one of the fliers when they are printed.

Right now because of dry weather some people are having problems with their landscapes because of inadequate sprinkling systems. Make sure that sprinkling systems are checked regularly to make sure all heads are operating properly and are not clogged with debris or missing.

If you need to do any re-landscaping, you can do that this time of year, too, and many properties are changing out annuals this month and putting ones that are more heat tolerant for the upcoming summer season. Some favorites include: marigolds, pentas, various colors of coleus, caladiums or portulaca and purslane. Local nurseries have good inventories of flowers and foliage plants for hot weather conditions so you shouldn’t have trouble finding these from your supplier.

If you have questions about landscaping problems this time of year, you can contact the Extension office at any time and get some answers that will help you. Dial 233-1750 in the north and central county area or 276-1260 in the south county area.
