Condo Gardening Tips
April 2007
By Gene Joyner, Extension Agent
Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service
This month is one of the driest times for our landscape plants and it’s important that irrigation systems be monitored regularly to insure that they are doing an adequate job. Don’t be guilty of overwatering landscapes because too much water with our warm temperatures can set up conditions very favorable for the spread of plant diseases.
If you forgot to fertilize last month, do so quickly so that plants have plenty of nutrients for this strong spring growth cycle. Also if you are in the process of doing large scale pruning, complete that as soon as possible prior to the beginning of our hurricane season June 1.
If you’re wanting to do additional landscaping, it’s safe to put in anything this time of year and it will have time to establish quickly. Remember that large trees and palms will need to be braced and secured for several months to insure that they root well going into the summer storm season.
If you have questions about plants in the landscape or the care of anything outside, you can contact the Palm Beach County Extension Service for free advice. Dial 233-1750 in the north and central county area or 276-1260 in the south county area.
Also don’t forget this month on April 18 will be our Condo Field Day at 2000 Condo in Palm Beach at Sloan’s Curve. If you did not receive a flier on it, contact my office at 233-1759 and one can be mailed to you.
