Condo Gardening Tips

January 2007

By Gene Joyner, Extension Agent
Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service

This time of year there’s not a lot of activities that need to be done concerning landscaping except protecting tender plants from cold damage if we get freezing temperatures. Most properties are not installing landscaping at this time of year or doing pruning or fertilizing. That is best accomplished at the end of February or early March when plants begin their active spring growth.

It’s normal this time of year for a lot of plants to be yellowing and dropping older leaves and this will be accelerated if we get low temperatures below 40 degrees.

Reserve your calendars for March and April for our spring condo field days which will be advertised next month. These are great opportunities to see typical problems and to get solutions how to correct them.

Insects and diseases can still occur this time of year on landscape plantings, but usually small infestations.

If you have questions about general landscape maintenance or want to know maybe suggested plants for certain areas, you can always get free advice from the Palm Beach County Extension Service. Call 233-1750 in the north and central county area or 276-1260 in the south county area.

The Extension Service also has a number of free publications on all types of plants, pests and general maintenance topics. These can be gotten any time during normal business hours from their offices.
