Condo Gardening Tips
May 2005

This month many people are experiencing dry hot conditions which is affecting plantings. You may see leaf loss on some plants or yellowing of the older leaves because of the stress placed on them. Until we get our summer rains beginning at the end of this month or early June, conditions probably won’t improve a lot.
This time of year many people are starting to do pruning in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season on larger trees. If you have it done, make sure it is done by qualified arborists and done correctly. Incorrect pruning can result in trees having more damage than if you didn’t prune them at all.
If you need CEUs for your manager license renewal, Thursday, May 19, will be the Extension sponsored condominium short course at the West Palm Beach Extension office and there will be six CEUs available. If you have not received a registration form for this, you can contact our Extension office at 233-1759 and get one mailed to you. The class runs from 8:30 to 5 and gives you a chance to pick up a number of CEUs in one day.
If you haven’t already done so, many properties are taking out the fall planted annuals and replacing them with heat tolerant ones for the upcoming summer months. Nurseries I’ve checked recently have good inventories of flowers and bedding plants of all types so you shouldn’t have trouble in getting some good choices for the upcoming season.
If you’re not sure what might be best or if you want some ideas on selection, contact the Extension Service for some free advice. Dial 233-1750 in the north and central county area or 276-1260 in the south county area.
