Herb Gardening

February 2007

By Gene Joyner, Extension Agent
Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service

This month because of mild conditions many herbs are starting a little more active growth earlier than they should so you may have to begin fertilizing and even some light pruning or shaping. Check the garden also for weed competition since many of our cool season weeds are growing very aggressively and will overtake your garden unless mulching is used or a lot of hand pulling.

If you want to set out plants at the end of this month it’s safe to put out pretty much any types of new plantings in the landscape including herbs and many garden stores do have herb transplants and, of course, you can buy seeds and start planting some seeds if you wish.

Some insect and disease problems are starting to show up and you may notice an increase in spider mites as we begin our dry spring. Syringing the plants regularly with strong streams of water will help dislodge mites and other small pests without having to apply any pesticides. Insecticidal soap products are safe to use on most herbs and, of course, can be washed off before the herbs are used.

You may notice an increase in caterpillar activity in your herb garden as many butterflies now are becoming more active and are laying eggs on herb host plants.

If you have questions about maintenance of your herbs or problems at this time of year, check with fellow members at monthly meetings or contact your county Extension
