Herb Gardening

Septmeber 2006

By Gene Joyner, Extension Agent
Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service

September is typically our wettest month of the year and many herb gardens don’t like all the increased rain and poor drainage. If we make it through this month though October begins our dry season and a moderation of temperatures also so herb gardens begin to start looking a lot better from October going into the winter season.

This time of year except for fighting weeds many people are not doing a whole lot in their herb gardens. Make sure that you are using mulches wherever practical and some people are holding off on major renovations to the herb garden until next month or even later.

If you have herbs in containers, try not to give them additional water because rainfall should be more than sufficient. Increased moisture levels can cause root damage resulting in plants declining or even dying.

If you have questions about care of your garden at this time of year, check with fellow members at monthly meetings or contact your local county Extension office.
