Florida Chinese Vegetables
Approximately
3,000 – 3,500 acres of Chinese vegetables are grown in Palm
Beach County. The majority is grown in the sandlands, with a couple
of hundred acres also being grown in the EAA. Most of the vegetables
are being marketed in areas with large Asian populations, such as
New York, Boston, Toronto, and Washington D.C. The term “Chinese
vegetables” is rather broad and includes crops from multiple
families. Examples of crops grown in Palm Beach County are: napa (tight-heading
Chinese cabbage), Chihili (semi-loose headed Chinese cabbabe), bok
choy and baby bok choy, u-choy (flowering bok choy), choy-sum (heading
bok choy), Chinese broccoli (gai lon), Chinese mustard, and Oriental
radish.
