Florida Cucumbers
The
cucumber, native to India, is believed by many to be one of the oldest
vegetables. It was specifically mentioned in the Bible and was grown
widely during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius (AD 14-37).
Cucumbers are also one of Florida’s oldest crops, known to be
grown by the Indians in the mid 1500’s. Production in Palm Beach
County commonly occurs as a second, or double, crop, usually following
tomatoes or bell peppers. Growers are able to utilize the already
formed elevated beds as well as the plastic mulch laid at the beginning
of the growing season.
