Florida Eggplant
The
eggplant, native to India, is grown on 400 – 800 acres in Palm
Beach County and approximately 1,500 acres in all of Florida. Florida
ranks first in all states with respect to eggplant production. Many
people used to believe that the consumption of eggplant could cause
madness and it was even termed mala insane and melazana, both of which
translate to “mad apple”. John Parkinson, an early authority
on vegetables, wrote in 1640: “…eggplants engender
melancholy, the Leprosie, Cancers, Piles, Imposumes, the Headache,
and a stinking breath, and change the complection into a foule clacke
and yellow colour, unlesse they be boyled in Vinegar.”
Fortunately, the reputation changed over the years and for eggplant,
a tender perennial grown as an annual, production has steadily increased.
