Florida Lettuce and Specialty Greens
There
are four major leafy salad crops – crisphead, butterhead, cos
(romaine), and leaf. In Palm Beach County, there is approximately
8,000 acres of lettuce being grown, almost all of that in the EAA.
We produce crisphead (iceberg or head lettuce), romaine, as well as
multiple types of leaf lettuce and specialty greens, including green
and red leaf, endive, and escarole. Lettuce is a cool season annual
crop. Even though the majority of the lettuce grown in the United
States occurs in California and Arizona, the winter growing season
in Florida has allowed for increased acreage in the past years.
