Florida Squash
There
are three dominant species of squash and pumpkin: Cucurbita maxima
and Cucurbita moschata (most of the winter squash cultivars),
and Cucurbita pepo (summer squash varieties and pumpkins).
In South Florida, the majority of what is grown is summer squash,
although there is some production of winter squash cultivars. Miami-Dade
County is the nation’s leader in squash production and accounts
for well over half of the state’s total acreage. Squash is also
in the same family as cucumbers, Cucurbitaceae.
