Palm Beach County Promotes Drowning Prevention

Palm Beach County’s Drowning Prevention Coalition is urging residents to stay safe in the water this summer.

Fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 14 and under, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To combat these statistics, the coalition strives to have zero drowning accidents in Palm Beach County. The community-based organization is supported by 30 area agencies.

The coalition offers these tips to help keep your kids safe in the water:

  • Teach children water safety and swimming skills as soon as possible
  • Teach yourself water safety and rescue swimming skills
  • Maintain constant visual contact with children in the pool or pool area
  • Always brief babysitters on water safety, emphasizing the need for constant supervision
  • Don’t leave a child alone in a body of water
  • Don’t leave out toys that might attract a child to a pool or pool area

The thrift store is a municipal inventory recovery joint effort involving 12 area local governments, including the Sheriff’s Office, Solid Waste Authority, the Healthcare District and several other municipalities. Everything sold supports the County’s taxpayers.

Spay Shuttle Provides Low-cost Sterilization for Pet Owners

In Palm Beach County, more than 10,000 animals are euthanized annually. To combat this statistic, the County’s Animal Care & Control offers a state-of-the-art mobile veterinary clinic – dubbed the “Spay Shuttle” – that offers affordable surgical sterilization for pet owners. Pet surgeries are completed in the morning and animals are released to their owners the same afternoon.

Sterilization is the most humane way to reduce the surplus animal population by preventing the birth of unwanted dogs and cats. It also helps control the cost of operating public animal shelters.

The Spay Shuttle provides services to all Palm Beach County residents. It currently operates Wednesday through Saturdays, except during a holiday week. For more information about the program, call (561) 233-SPAY (7729) or click here: http://www.pbcgov.com/publicsafety/animalcare/spay_shuttle.htm.

For dates or location sites or to schedule an appointment, call (561) 233-1261. Space is limited and appointments are not always available.
