Mary McCarty - Biography

Hello and welcome to my Web site! I am pleased to represent you as the District 4 Commissioner for Palm Beach County. In 1990, I was elected to serve on the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, District 4. Currently, I am serving my fifth and final term for which I was recently reelected without opposition. My career in politics started in 1974 as an intern to U.S. House Majority Leader Thomas "Tip" O’Neil and from 1987-1990 I was a City Commissioner and Vice Mayor in Delray Beach. I have been a resident of Palm Beach County for over 37 years and live in Delray Beach with my husband, Kevin McCarty.

My district includes 12 cities: Lantana, South Palm Beach, Manalapan, Hypoluxo, Ocean Ridge, Boynton Beach, Briny Breezes, Gulfstream, Village of Golf, Delray Beach, Highland Beach and Boca Raton. As a County Commissioner, I have been committed to maintaining a close working relationship with these municipalities in order to better serve the community. I am proud to tell you that I was recently selected "County Commissioner of the Year" (an unprecedented second year in a row) by the Palm Beach County League of Cities, Inc. for outstanding support and service to the municipalities in Palm Beach County.

As a public servant, I have had some truly rewarding opportunities to be affiliated with various charitable and not-for-profit organizations. One affiliation that I am particularly proud of is Toward A More Perfect Union (TMPU). As founding chairperson, I was excited to be part of the vision of creating an organization composed of different cultures and ethnicities. The purpose of TMPU is to foster understanding of the commonality of issues and concerns of people of diversity. The organization has often been used as a resource for cities and agencies that need help in dealing with sensitivity issues in race relations. Some of the other organizations that I am proud to be affiliated with are the Achievement Centers for Children and Families, the Florence Fuller Child Development Centers and United Way of Palm Beach County.

As a result of my ongoing commitment to the future of Florida, I was appointed in 2005 by former Governor Bush and am currently serving on the Board of the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida, which focuses on growth management throughout the state.

I pride myself on my personal involvement with my constituents and assisting them whenever possible. I actively seek to visit and/or speak at homeowners associations and various civic organizations. Please feel free to contact me if you require assistance or would like me to attend a meeting where I can discuss specific issues of concern and/or provide general information concerning the County.

I also invite you to join my E-Newsletters mailing list which is sent out on a regular basis, providing up-to-date information on current County happenings. To sign-up, click on the E-Newsletter icon on my website (top right corner) or email me at mmccarty@pbcgov.com
