PALM BEACH COUNTY CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMISSION SPONSORS The Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) recently completed its 24th Citizen’s Criminal Justice Academy. Nearly 50 class participants were in attendance for the graduation with certificates of completion handed out by CJC Chairman Douglas Duncan and West Palm Beach Police Chief Vincent Demasi. The keynote graduation speaker was attorney Ellen D. Roberts. A total of 67 citizens participated in the 10-week class, which took place from January 10 through March 14. The Citizen’s Criminal Justice Academy was created in 1998 by the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission to provide an opportunity for citizens to learn more about how the criminal justice system functions in Palm Beach County. The academy features speakers from the local, state and federal criminal justice system and provides a unique insight into how the system functions. The course highlights how the different courts, corrections and law enforcement agencies interact. There are over 50 guest speakers who volunteer their time to the academy. The Citizen’s Criminal Justice Academy has educated nearly a thousand residents of Palm Beach County over the years. This year’s graduating class was the largest in history with residents of all ages. The academy is especially helpful to those interested in pursuing criminal justice as a career. The next Citizen’s Criminal Justice Academy will take place in the fall of 2013 with a revised format. The coordinators for the event are Rosalind Murray and Arlene Griffiths.
