Geographic Location. Palm Beach County is the largest of the 67counties in the State of Florida, even larger than either Delaware or Rhode Island. It is located in the subtropical, southeastern portion of the State known as the “Gold Coast” that consists of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Palm Beach County's total area is 2,386.5 square miles. Its land area is 1,974.2 square miles and water area is 412.3 square miles. The water area includes a portion of Lake Okeechobee which is the largest freshwater lake inside Florida and ranks as one of America's largest lakes. Palm Beach County's shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean extends 45 linear miles north to south. The eastern County is a thriving urban area while the western area of the County is more rural with wetlands covering the southwestern part and agriculture dominating the northwestern end. Four inlets connect the Intra-coastal Waterway to the ocean. The County's width is 53 linear miles and mean elevation is 15 feet. The U.S. Geological Survey can provide topographic maps of Palm Beach County. Climate. One of Palm Beach County's primary assets and attractions is its balmy weather. Average temperatures are: annual 74.9°F, summer 82.°F, and winter 66.7°F. The County's pleasant year-round climate has enhanced its image as a place possessing an outstanding quality of life due to an exceptional working and recreational environment. This is the positive perception held in common by existing and prospective residents as well as by tourists and business people throughout the world. The dry season is associated with the winter months. The wet season extends from spring through summer, with an average annual rainfall of 61.7 inches.
