Geoprocessing Section

A section of the Engineering Information Technology division, Geoprocessing supports the development and maintenance of Geographical Information System applications and data, and performs extensive mapping services. We exclusively maintain the County road base data, critical to several countywide applications including Fire-Rescue and Sheriff emergency responders. Other mapping data we maintain include transportation-related features such as railroad and air facilities as well as County landmarks, boundaries, commission districts, and surface water features.

Geoprocessing provides support for the development of GIS applications throughout Engineering by handling hardware, software and licensing; by assistance with database design and development, and especially facilitating and encouraging collaboration between Engineering divisions regarding their application designs.

Our unique position in supporting all divisions and our representation in Countywide GIS coordination and planning put us in a position to make the most effective and efficient use of GIS technology for Engineering.

The GIS practitioners in Geoprocessing have the capability to use advanced tools to do sophisticated analysis of spatial information. One example is the annual calculation of municipal street lane miles for all 38 communities in Palm Beach County, for the purpose of distributing state gasoline tax revenues equitably.

Several mapping products are generated by the Geoprocessing in support of Engineering and Countywide projects. The most notable is the Palm Beach County Road Atlas, with over 150 pages of detailed county maps. Geoprocessing gathers, symbolizes and indexes data in over 25 layers of information, designs the book covers and arranges for the publication of this product annually. Other popular map products include County Commission District Maps, ZIP Code boundary maps, and several ad hoc requests for specialized maps in support of management initiatives.
