Environmental Enhancement and Shoreline Protection

- Completed four major beach restoration projects, in Jupiter, Juno, and Ocean Ridge. Served as local sponsor or funding partner for beach nourishment projects in Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Palm Beach.
- Constructed 17 dune restoration projects that have restored 69 acres along 15 miles of beach.
- Formed a partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and many municipalities in the development of a management plan for the Lake Worth Lagoon that focuses on habitat restoration and overall improvements to water quality. Produced two reports that described the natural resources of the Lake Worth Lagoon and the remaining estuarine ecosystems in the county and provided recommendations for environmental restoration projects
- Restored and enhanced over 70 acres of mangrove hammock habitats within the estuaries of Palm Beach County, including 45 acres on Munyon Island (located in the Lake Worth Lagoon), 3.5 acres at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton and 6 acres along Sims Creek in Jupiter.
- Coordinated the establishment of Manatee Protection and Boater Safety Speed Zones for estuarine water bodies in the county
- Developed a management plan for the Chain of Lakes that includes 8.5 miles of shoreline restoration and retrofitting of approximately 90 storm water outfall discharges
- Placed approximately 50,000 tons of artificial reef materials, including ships, surplus concrete structures and limestone rock.
- Developed legislation that abolished an ineffectual special district (the South Lake Worth Inlet District). Successfully assumed responsibility for management of the South Lake Worth (Boynton) Inlet.
- Coordinated and implement a county-wide coastal monitoring program to provide regional data for coastal management.
- Received two grants from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The first was for the Tree Salvage Program and one for the Prescribed Burning Program
- Developed a tree seedling Give-a-way Program and gave away over 25,000 seedlings
- Created a Forestry Partnership Program to assist municipalities with urban landscaping and forestry activities.
- Completed Federally-funded 3 year artificial reef monitoring study.
