In 1995 began the enhancement of Spanish River Park, located in the City of Boca Raton. This project involved the removal of 1.2 acres of Australian pines and the creation of 1.2 acres of mangroves and transitional wetlands habitat. A total of 3.5 acres of existing mangroves were also enhanced by the deepening of a ditch and connecting this relatively stagnant area to the Intracoastal Waterway. 6,000 red mangroves were planted by several volunteer groups. Total project costs were $110,000 with $50,000 coming from Saltwater Fishing License proceeds and the balance from the County Vessel Registration Fee Trust Fund and in-kind services.
