Harbor Branch logo Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI [External Link]) is dedicated to exploring the world's oceans, integrating the science and technology of the sea with the needs of humankind. The HBOI campus is located on 600 acres along the Indian River Lagoon in St. Lucie County, Florida. HBOI is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our staff of 300 includes scientists, engineers, mariners and support personnel. We are involved in research and education in the marine sciences; biological, chemical, and environmental sciences; marine biomedical sciences; marine mammal conservation; aquaculture; and ocean engineering. The institution's Media Lab develops educational programs to raise public awareness of the marine environment, illustrating how the health of our planet is inextricably linked to the state of our oceans.

The Media Lab
The Media Lab has a long term commitment to raise awareness of complex marine habitat and fisheries conservation issues, through the development of programs like Lake Worth Lagoon: Urban Estuary. The Media Lab's primary goal is to get people excited about science - to communicate the adventure of frontier research while increasing marine science literacy. By doing so, we instill an awareness of marine ecosystems as frontiers worth preserving. Media Lab CD-ROM and websites programs like Sea Profiles [External Link], Living Lagoon, and @Sea [External Link] bring the excitement and mystery of ocean science to every desktop. We feel that our programs have an impact on public opinion and that they are helping to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Among the many goals of the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) is to promote resources protection, stewardship, and pollution prevention ethics through public education. With funding provided by the Florida Inland navigation District's Waterway Assistance Program, ERM joined forces with HBOI to produce Lake Worth Lagoon: Urban Estuary to highlight the protection, preservation, and enhancement of Lake Worth Lagoon.

Florida Inland Navigation District
Florida Inland Navigation District logo Funding for Lake Worth Lagoon: Urban Estuary was provided by the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND). The mission of FIND is to perform the functions of the "local sponsor" of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway project in Florida, a State/Federal navigation project. In this capacity the District provides all lands required for the navigation removed from project including rights of way and lands for the management of dredged material the waterway channel during dredging activities. Through the Waterway Assistance Program, FIND provides funding assistance is to other governments within the District to develop waterway improvement projects such as access channels, boat ramps, public marinas, fishing piers, boardwalks, waterfront parks, environmental enhancement and restoration, environmental education and boating safety.
