Welcome to NENA – the Northeast Everglades Natural Area!

NENA is different from the other natural areas managed by ERM. It isn’t a specific place. It is an amazing collection of nearly 150,000 acres of conservation lands in a region that includes parts of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. There are nine different entities that manage the sites in this collection, each site varying in size from a few to tens-of-thousands of acres apiece. This combination yields a wide range of nature-based outdoor recreational opportunities from bird watching in an area only open to foot traffic to hunting in an area accessible by off-road vehicle.
NENA evolved from the realization that this area could easily rival a national park as an ecotourism destination. The concept is simple: preserve and enhance the region’s natural resources; then enhance the opportunities for recreation, education and research. The result: NENA will become a world class destination.

Palm Beach County has committed to implementing this vision for NENA with ERM taking the lead in:
• creating four specific connector trails
• building facilities needed to establish trails for hikers, horseback riders and bicyclists in the Ocean-to-Lake Corridor
• establishing physical links between sites through interagency coordination
• creating activity guides for where and how to hike, paddle, horse-back ride, bicycle, learn and explore within NENA
• establishing activity and education centers through interagency coordination
