Sea Turtle Protection and Sand Preservation

The County's Sea Turtle Protection and Sand Preservation Code establishes standards for new and existing coastal lighting in order to protect adult and hatchling sea turtles from the dangers of disorientation caused by artificial lighting. New coastal developments must have lighting plans approved by the County. Coastal residents are encouraged to retrofit existing lighting to make beaches safer for these threatened and endangered species which depend on Palm Beach County for nesting habitat. In addition, the ordinance protects beach sediments from removal or degradation.
