  1. Q: My mother lives with me and I am employed. I am not comfortable leaving her alone while I am working. Is there a facility where I can take her while I am at work?
    A: You may want to consider Adult Day Care. It is a social and recreational program for seniors who are 60 years or older, are physically or mentally impaired, and need a supervised environment.

  2. Q: Does Palm Beach County offer any help to "troubled teens" or "at-risk children"?
    A: The Youth Affairs Office (561-712-6640) offers a Youth Service Bureau which provides professional counseling for individuals, families, children aged 0-17, and school groups in Palm Beach County. They also have a 3-month residential treatment program at the Highridge Family Center which is for "at-risk" adolescents aged 11-15. It provides professional counseling and educational instruction is provided.

  3. Q: I am behind on my electric bill. Is there anywhere I can go for assistance?
    A: Yes. The Community Action Program administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LEAP. It is designed to provide financial relief from high-energy costs to prevent service disconnection for families in crisis. For more information, click on LEAP.

  4. Q: Does Palm Beach County have any programs to help farm workers?
    A: Yes. During the past twenty-five years the Community Services Department has run a job training program to help farm workers and their dependents complete their education and learn new skills. The object of this effort is to provide migrants with opportunities to get permanent, year-round jobs to break the cycle of seasonal migration. To this end the Migrant Program offers vocational training, and provides courses in English language proficiency and high school diploma.

  5. Q: Does the Migrant Program offer any programs for children?
    A: The name Migrant Program is a shortened form of the Adult Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Program. Though the traditional program is for adults, we now offer a program for youth, ages 14-21. A full-time counselor and two part-time assistants are helping 25-30 at-risk youth enrolled in a program called Step Ahead to Success. Through tutoring, classroom work, family involvement, and social activities, these students will complete their education as planned. This program is aided by the staff of the school district's Child Migrant Program, which offers many other services to farmworker children.

  6. Q: Are there any grants for homeless shelters?
    A: The Emergency Shelter Grant Program (ESGP) is also provided by Housing and Community Development. These funds can be used for operation and maintenance of homeless facilities, provision of essential services to the homeless, and homeless prevention activities.

  7. Q: What is a block grant and how do I apply for funds?
    A: Housing and Community Development publishes a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) in October of each year which summarizes pertinent information about the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The NOFA also advises the public of the grant application process and the availability of grant applications. There are several types of activities that these funds can be used for such as acquisition, demolition, code enforcement, construction, fair housing enforcement, public facilities, public services, rehabilitation, and relocation.   8. Q: How do I qualify for the HOME Program and how do I apply?
    A: The HOME Program is for those who have not owned a home within the past three years. You can apply through a non-profit organization or community development corporation (i.e. Urban League of Palm Beach County, Community Financing Consortium, North West Riviera Beach CRC, Lake Worth CDC, etc.) You can quality for up to $25,000 depending on your total household income and size.   9. Q: What is SHIP?
    A: Housing and Community Development can provide information on the State Housing Initiative Partnership Program. This program provides funds to local governments to promote and support affordable housing. Qualification is based on total household income and size. Very low-income households can receive up to $17,500 and low-income households can receive up to $12,500.

  10. Q: Is there anywhere I can go for help in preparing my Federal Tax Return?
    A: The Community Action Program provides help with income tax preparation for low-income families. For more information click on Income Tax Assistance

  11. Q: How can I get information on nutrition education for individuals and groups?
    A: The Palm Beach Cooperative Extension provides nutrition information for individuals and groups through the Family Nutrition Program and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program. Group education is offered to food stamp eligible recipients in public schools, Head Start, the Palm Beach County Health Department, County libraries, and area community and senior centers. Professional presentations to organizations and groups on food nutrition and health issues offered by Extension professionals. In-service credits (CEU's) are offered on selected courses.   12. Q: Is there any help available for school supplies for my children?
    A: Yes. The Community Action Program provides vouchers for low-income families to purchase clothes, shoes and supplies for school-age children. For more information click on Back to School Program.

  13. Q: What types of activities are available at Senior Centers?
    A: The Palm Beach County Senior Centers provide educational and recreational activities Mondays through Fridays. Some of the activities are line, tap and ball-room dance; Italian, Spanish and French lessons; oil painting, wood carving, yoga, low-impact aerobics, chair exercise, defensive driving and ceramics. There are also pool tables and game rooms.

  14. Q: I am a senior citizen who is no longer able to drive. Is there transportation available to take me to the doctor?

  15. Q: Are there any programs available to help with the high cost of summer care for my children?
    A: Yes. The Community Action Program provides scholarships for low-income families for summer day camp. For more information see: Summer Camp Scholarship Program.

  16. Q: What benefits or services are provided for veterans?
    A: Veterans Services provides assistance to veterans and their dependents in filing and developing claims and appeals pertaining to the full spectrum of veterans' entitlements. Veterans may be eligible for: compensation, pension, aid and attendance or housebound benefits, medical care, education, home loan guaranty, burial benefits, income verification. The state of Florida offers some special benefits to veterans such as the Homestead Tax Exemption and Veterans Nursing Home. In addition, Veterans Services can assist veterans in getting copies of discharge papers, information on preference in employment and identification cards.

  17. Q: I am a veteran. Am I eligible for care at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach or the Community VA Clinics?
    A: Yes. Since October 1998 all honorable discharged veterans may receive are at medical centers. A co-payment may apply depending on your families combined income. A copy of your discharge document is required to enroll at the hospital.

  18. Q: Will the VA fill my prescription from my private doctor?
    A: You may bring the prescriptions to the VA if you are enrolled and if your VA Primary Health Care Provider agrees with the medications, they may provide you with VA Prescription for the medications. NOTE: The VA physician may not agree with the medications prescribed by your private doctor.

  19. Q: I heard I am entitled to an insurance dividend refund if I was a WWII veteran?
    A: No. This had been a hoax for years. Only veterans who have a VA Insurance policy may receive a dividend check.

  20. Q: I am a Vietnam Veteran and I developed prostate cancer. Am I eligible for compensation benefits?
    A: If you served in Vietnam or the waters off Vietnam, you have been considered to be exposed to Agent Orange and may be eligible for compensation. Contact us for further information and assistance.

  21. Q: I am honorable discharged. May I receive a free burial?
    A: All honorable discharged veterans are entitled to be buried in a Federal or Florida State Cemetery for free. Included in this service is the opening and closing cost, perceptual care, casket liner, and grave marker. The veteran (family) would be responsible for the funeral, casket, and transportation of the remains to the cemetery. Please call for additional information.
