The Division of Animal Care & Control (ACC) offers pet adoptions wit fees from $10 to $70. ACC also features low cost spaying and neutering for $10 to all Palm Beach County residents, educational programs on responsible care for companion animals, rabies vaccinations and licensing, cruelty investigations and auctions of livestock and exotic animals. Public notices are issued for auctions in accordance with state law. Animals impounded by ACC may be reclaimed by their owners upon proof of ownership, licensing and payment of impoundment and/or medical fees. Stray dogs and cats are held for a minimum of five days. Pets not claimed by their owners may be placed for adoption. All adopted dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies and either microchipped or tattooed. Hours to the public are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When a person has been bitten by an animal and the skin has been scratched or punctured drawing blood, the Animal Care & Control Division must be notified immediately. The Health Unit will require unvaccinated animals to be quarantined at Animal Care & Control or a veterinary hospital for rabies observation. The owner must pay for all quarantine expenses.

Animal Care and Control (ACC), a division of the Public Safety Department, is the agency responsible for enforcement of domestic animal laws and the safety and welfare of animals and the public. ACC's mission is to encourage responsibility by providing educational programs on humane treatment of animals, enforcement of county, state and federal animal laws helping to unite lost pets with owners, encourage early spaying or neutering and to provide safe shelter and veterinary care for lost, abandoned or unwanted animals. The shelter offers emergency response for calls on sick and injured stray domestic animals 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The ACC Spay Shuttle offers early spaying and neutering for $15 to County residents. For additional information on adoptions, see Animal Adoptions. Persons who operate pet shops, kennels, stables and/or grooming parlors are required to obtain a permit from Animal Care & Control. The permits include a fee, special operating requirements and periodic inspections by the Animal Care & Control Division.

Rabies license tags are required for all dogs and cats residing in Palm Beach County. Puppies and kittens less than 4 months of age require a juvenile tag. Senior citizens receive a 25% discount on tags.

The Lost and Found Coordinator can assist in filing a Lost or Found report and our interactive computer program "SNAP" offers a photo-journey for viewing all stray animals at the shelter. The owner of an animal that is a nuisance may be in violation of County law. The County Animal Care & Control Division investigates alleged violations when at least two notarized affidavits are received from complaining neighbors. Pet owners are responsible for removing waste deposited by their animals in public areas or on the private property of others.

It is against the law for dogs to run loose within the County. Dogs must always be restrained by a leash or similar device when off the owner's property. It is against the law for anyone to keep a stray or lost animal unless Animal Care & Control is notified immediately through the Lost and Found section. All towing companies and tow trucks must be licensed and registered, and tow trucks must display a Palm Beach County permit decal on the driver's side windshield.
