Telephone Operations

 

The Voice Services Section is responsible for telephone systems and voice network services that support the communications requirements of all County locations. Over 400 locations are supported ranging in size from a single telephone instrument at a lifeguard station up to more than 3,300 telephone instruments on the telephone system supporting the Main Courthouse, State Attorney/Public Defender Building, the Governmental Center Complex and associated parking garages. Overall, the total number of telephone instruments Voice Services supports exceeds 8,800.

The voice, data, radio and audio back bone network is comprised of 314 1.544mb Megalink (DS1) spans connecting most of our locations and providing increased reliability and reduced costs. This network supports more than 8,200 voice, radio and non-ISS NAS data circuits to all County locations. Common carrier expenditures exceed $4 million per year.

The Voice Services Section has a staff of seventeen including the Telephone Systems Manager, Network Systems Analyst, Telephone Operations Supervisor, Network Administrator, Telephone Service Analysts, Telephone Technicians, and Clerical support.

Voice Services processes approximately 113 Communications Work Orders, 30 customer service requests for cabling and 209 trouble tickets per month. Work order and trouble activity is accomplished by efforts of the Network and Telephone Analysts, Network Administrator, Telephone Technicians, and outside vendors.

Additionally, Voice Services is responsible for managing all contracts with various cellular telephone vendors, thereby providing our "customers" with the best service options at reasonable rates. The current number of devices for active cellular telephone instruments and wireless modems are 1,037 and 57 respectively. These numbers are expected to increase over the years. Included in our inventory are numerous operational instruments reserved for emergencies and disaster recovery. These are loaned out on a case-by-case basis in response to temporary needs of the work centers we support.

Calling Cards are another facet of telephone services that the Voice Services Section coordinates. Currently the County has approximately 61 active calling cards.

Voice Service is also responsible for the design, specification, configuration, project management and ongoing support for telephone systems and data systems cabling for all new County construction and renovation projects
