Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Demonstration Gardens Gardeners/ Curators

 

Reports To: Keith Patton, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Coordinator

General Description: Maintain demo gardens, plant labels and interpretive signage

Principle Duties:

  • Properly prune demo plants
  • Installation of new plants
  • Identify problem plants and suggest plant replacements
  • Mulch plant beds
  • Check irrigation systems for leaks, blockage and spray patterns.
  • Identify plants and submit plant names (common and botanical) for plant labels to be made.
  • Update interpretive information as the gardens' evolve.
  • Keep birdbaths cleaned

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of the Master Gardener training program
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Desire to learn more about plants and their pests
  • Desire to work outside
  • Ability to bend, reach and lift during the physical part of garden maintenance
  • Dependable and reliable
  • Deal courteously with the public

General Office/Garden Procedures:

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Dress appropriately for environmental conditions and encounters with the public
  • Bring personal equipment like gloves, hats, knee pads, hand-pruners, sun block, insect repellant, bottled water
  • Wear your Master Gardener name badge
  • Arrive on time
  • Call if you cannot keep your commitment

Staff Responsibilities:

  • Provide plants, plant labels and interpretive signs upon request
  • Provide mulch, pitch forks, rakes and wheelbarrows
  • Provide information and training on pruning expectations
  • Assist with garden renovations and new designs
  • A BIG smile and a sincere Thank you
