Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Create a Florida Yard Workshop Assistant

 

Reports To: Keith Patton, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Coordinator

General Description: Advises on FY&N principles for residential sites and homeowner associations.

Principle Duties:

  • Assist class participants on selecting the right plant for the right place.
  • Advice on plant characteristics (height, diameter, growth habit, salt tolerance, sun, shade, temperature ranges)
  • Provide information on flower color, thorns, toxicity, wildlife attracting qualities, potential pests, disease, or particular maintenance concerns

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of the Master Gardener training program
  • Successful completion of advanced FY&N training
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Desire to learn more about plants, pests and landscape design
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Dependable and reliable
  • Deal courteously with the public

General Office Procedures:

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Dress appropriately for professional office work and meeting with the public
  • Wear your Master Gardener name badge
  • Arrive on time
  • Call if you cannot keep your commitment
  • Bring favorite gardening book(s) as a resource

Staff Responsibilities:

  • Schedule workshops
  • Provide IFAS publications for class attendees
  • Bring assorted garden books as resource materials
  • Provide other props and resources for use in landscape design
  • Support MGs ideas and recommendations
