BCC Briefs

At the February 27, 2007 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board took the following action:

CVB – agreed to allow the Convention and Visitors Bureau to continue promoting tourism in Palm Beach County; ordered a management audit of the Tourist Development Council, which oversees the CVB and three other bed-tax-supported agencies.

Grand Jury Funding – approved a budget transfer of $10,000 from the general fund to pay for two grand jury investigations, one involving the City of West Palm Beach, the other for child abuse protocol review of the Department of Child and Family Services.

Value Adjustment Board – appropriated $150,000 to the Clerk & Comptroller’s Office for extra costs associated with property tax petition reviews filed with the Value Adjustment Board. The School District will reimburse the County 40 percent ($60,000) of the amount.

Bond Funds - reallocated a total of $4 million from the 2002 Recreation/Culture bond issue to 11 new projects in District 4. The money was previously awarded to the Boca Raton Cultural Center, Old School Square and the Little Palm Family Theater.

Budget Oversight - discussed general cost-cutting recommendations by the recently appointed Budget Advisory Committee.

ATVs – opted out of a recently adopted state law that allows all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to be driven on unpaved roadways during daytime hours, if the posted speed limited is below 35 mph. The BCC’s decision affects only roads in unincorporated Palm Beach County; local municipalities may also opt out.

Glades Consultant – approved a contract with Michael Jackson of L&MJ Consulting, Inc. in the amount of $64,800 annually to serve as a District 6 representative in the Glades area.

Housing Planner – approved creation of a new contract position -- principal housing planner -- with the PBC Department of Housing and Community Development. The $90,690 contract, paid with state and federal funds, will terminate when the funds are exhausted.

SWA Transfer Station – approved the sale of approximately 41 acres of land on State Road 7 south of Boynton Beach Blvd for $5.1 million to the Solid Waste Authority for a new trash transfer station.
