A request for proposals (RFP) to select a construction manager has been issued by the Max Planck Florida Institute for construction of its new 100,000-square-foot bio-imaging research facility at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus.
The Board of County Commissioners has allocated $86.9 million to construct the Max Planck facility adjacent to Scripps Florida. The total local contribution is $94 million, which has been matched by the state. The new research center is expected to create an estimated 1,800 direct and indirect jobs over the next two decades, resulting in more than $2 billion in local economic activity.
Construction will begin in about a year and should take approximately 18 months. Interested firms must meet the minimum qualifications, including direct experience in the construction of major educational, institutional, industrial and research projects. Three of those projects should have been completed within the past 10 years, each with a value of at least $50 million. A full list of requirements is available at www.maxplanckflorida.org. The deadline to apply is February 25, 2009.
The architect for the project is Washington, D.C.-based Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects, LLP. Jones Lang LaSalle Americas, Inc., a financial and professional services firm, serves as the program manager overseeing development and construction.
The Max Planck Society, based in Germany, is a world-class, nonprofit, scientific research organization with an annual operating budget of $2.1 billion and 81 institutes worldwide. The facility in Jupiter is Max Planck’s first in the U.S. Local research will focus on the most advanced techniques to visualize microscopic molecular processes. Bio-imaging provides a critical opportunity to translate discoveries of basic research into clinical and patient-oriented applications, which can ultimately be used to help improve medical diagnostics and medical care.
