County to Host NENA Bike-N-Hike on March 7

To celebrate Bike Month 2009, the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management has scheduled a Northeast Everglades Natural Area (NENA) Bike-N-Hike event for Saturday, March 7.

The easy, eight-mile, round-trip bike ride will follow the C-18W Canal management road between the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area (JWCWMA) and Hungryland Slough Natural Area. This same route is a proposed NENA multiuser trail, known as the Pântano Trail, connecting Riverbend Park with the JWCWMA.
The ride will also include a short, guided hike through the Hungryland Slough Natural Area. There is an opportunity to explore the JWCWMA and Pine Jog’s Everglades Youth Conservation Camp after the event. An entrance fee of $3/person is required to access the JWCWMA.

8 a.m. Registration & Multiuser Education
8:30 a.m. Welcome & Introduction
8:45 a.m. Ride Departure
11:30 a.m. Ride Return to J.W. Corbett

Participant Guidelines
Bicycles with wide or “fat” tires recommended
  • Bring $3/person for FFWC Day-Use Permit paid at Corbett entrance.
  • Sign in upon arrival on the day of the event & complete a waiver of liability.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy, close-toed shoes (no flip-flops).
  • Stay hydrated.  Bring 1-2 bottles of water.  Snacks will be provided.
  • Stay with the group and follow the directions of the ride leader.
  • Helmets are recommended.  Florida law requires bicycle riders under the age of 16 to wear a helmet. 

  
DIRECTIONS to J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area:  South entrance is located in Loxahatchee of off Seminole Pratt-Whitney Road. Go west on Northlake Blvd., Okeechobee Blvd., or Southern Blvd. Go north on Seminole Pratt-Whitney Road to the J.W. Corbett entrance on the left.
