District 7 County Commissioner Addie L. Greene, citing a number of health issues, has decided to step down from the Board of County Commissioners. She made the announcement at a news conference in the Rose Garden of the County Government Center. Her last day will be April 30.
Flanked by friends, community leaders and fellow commissioners, Commissioner Greene told reporters, “I have always said that if I could not do the job at the highest level of service, then I would step aside.”
In particular, Commissioner Greene said arthritis in her knees has made it very difficult to get to all the meetings and functions required of a county commissioner. She said the residents of Palm Beach County need and deserve a full-time commissioner and that she simply no longer had the physical capability. “I want to truly thank the citizens of Palm Beach County for allowing me the privilege of serving you,” she said.
Commissioner Greene said she is proud of the numerous community projects she helped facilitate during her eight years as the District 7 representative and hoped that whomever the governor chooses as a successor will continue the effort.
Commissioner Greene was first elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2000 and was reelected in 2004 and 2008. Because of term limits, this would have been her last four-year term. Prior to county government, Commissioner Greene served eight years in the state House of Representatives and six years on the Mangonia Park Town Council.
After leaving the BCC, Commissioner Greene said she hoped to become executive director of the Palm Beach County Caucus of Black Elected Officials, an organization she founded.
