Commissioner Koons Helps Dedicate New Westgate Splashpark
Kids in the Westgate neighborhood of West Palm Beach will be keeping cool this summer, thanks to the opening of a new splashpark at the Westgate Recreation Center, located at 3691 Oswego Avenue. Commissioner Jeff Koons was on hand to help cut the ribbon on a warm, sunny Saturday morning. The new aquatic facility was dedicated to the late Joe Pitts, the unofficial “Mayor of Westgate,” in recognition of his many contributions to the neighborhood. The brightly colored water playground is packed with cool, wet fun for kids of all ages. The interactive features, enhanced with changing computerized programs, include rotating spray cannons, a water buggy, tipping water buckets, and ground-level geysers. A chlorinated, re-circulating water filtration system ensures no wasted water, and shade sails have been provided for sun protection. Newly added benches and picnic tables are also conveniently located nearby so families can take occasional breaks to simply watch the fun or enjoy a picnic. Best of all, admission to the splashpark is free. The opening of the splashpark preceded the annual “Celebrate Westgate” community event co-hosted by Palm Beach County Parks & Recreation and the Westgate/Belvedere Homes Community Redevelopment Agency. The festival included live DJ entertainment, games, activities, and a wildlife educational exhibit. It also featured a family art tent and community services exhibits.
