Volunteers with the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) were very busy during the first three months of 2012. From January 1 through March 31 they donated 700 labor hours to help Palm Beach County’s environment.
More than 230 volunteers worked on 22 habitat restoration projects in county-owned natural areas. They removed 21,192 pounds of trash and invasive exotic vegetation from wooded areas, scrublands, and wetlands. The trash varied in size from glass salt shakers and vinyl records to a Subaru vehicle and washing machine. Volunteers also planted 1,117 native shrubs and flowers around a habitat restoration project at Pondhawk Natural Area in Boca Raton.
ERM’s volunteer program is a valuable tool that offers land managers a large supply of energetic workers who fight the heat, insects and difficult terrain to help protect the county’s natural treasures.
