Building Safety Week Open House at Vista Center
May 8, 2008 There was an excellent turnout at the Vista Center complex for an open house on May 8 in recognition of Building Safety Week (May 5-11). The event was hosted by the Palm Beach County Building Division, along with the Contractor Certification Division and Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue. The theme, “Building Safety: Where You Live, Work and Play,” was aimed at raising public awareness of critical safety issues to help ensure the structural soundness of buildings, reliability of fire prevention and suppression systems, and safety and efficiency of plumbing and mechanical systems. Many people may not know which projects in and around their home require a permit and which ones do not; why you should always hire licensed contractors to perform work on your home; what the terms “building green” and “living green” really mean; or how to harden an older home for the next storm. These are just some of the essential day-to-day safety issues handled by the Palm Beach County Building and Contractor Certification divisions. Visitors received informative pamphlets about pool safety, mold prevention, green building and preparing for natural disasters, as well as giveaways such as water conservation kits. They also had the chance to chat one-on-one with inspectors, plan reviewers and other trade professionals about specific safety and code compliance issues. # # #
