Sign Up for Volunteer Events with ERM

The Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) has two weekday volunteer events and two weekend volunteer events planned for May. Additional projects may be added at a later date. The projects are designed for volunteers ages 16 and older. Volunteers 15 and under must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

VOLUNTEER EVENT  (WEEKDAY EVENT)
What: Removing trash from mechanically chopped habitat restoration area
Where: Lake Park Scrub Natural Area – Lake Park

When: Thursday, May 17, 2012
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Directions: From I-95 exit at Northlake Blvd. – head east on Northlake Blvd. to Old Dixie Hwy. – turn right and head south on Old Dixie Hwy. for roughly one mile – turn right at Industrial Ave. (look for a white county truck parked at the corner of Industrial Ave. and Old Dixie Hwy. to locate entrance to natural area) – parking area is along the side of a dirt road leading to natural area gate.
Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, boots or sneakers. Restroom facilities are not available at this site. We will be working in brush-filled areas so volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 12 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT  
What: Trash removal, Invasive plant removal
Where: Frenchman’s Forest Natural Area – 12201 Prosperity Farms Rd. - Palm Beach Gardens

When: Saturday, May 19, 2012
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (NOTE: Early Start Time)
Directions: From I-95 exit at PGA Blvd. – head east on PGA Blvd. to Prosperity Farms Road – turn left and head north on Prosperity Farms Road for roughly 1 mile – the natural area entrance is located on the west side of Prosperity Farms Road (just north of Cross Community Church) – turn into the parking lot and look for a white county truck to locate volunteer staging area.
Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, hiking boots or sneakers. We will be “crashing and bashing” through saw palmetto so volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes they don’t mind getting dirty. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at various stores located along PGA Blvd. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT  (WEEKDAY EVENT)
What: Trash removal, Planting native vegetation    
Where: Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area – 150 Hypoluxo Road – Hypoluxo

When: Wednesday, May 23, 2012
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  (NOTE: Early Start Time)
Directions: From I-95 exit at Hypoluxo Road – head east on Hypoluxo Road for roughly 1 mile – the natural area is located on the south side of Hypoluxo Road between Overlook Road and U.S. Highway 1 – look for the two large wooden observation towers to locate the parking lot.
Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, boots or sneakers. We will be working in brush-filled areas – so volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at various stores located across the street from the natural area. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Volunteers will be working in open areas so be prepared for the sun and heat. Event participation is limited to the first 12 volunteers who register.

Where: Pondhawk Natural Area – Boca Raton

When: Saturday, May 26, 2012
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (NOTE: Early Start Time)
Directions: From I-95 exit at Yamato Road - head west on Yamato Road to Military Trail - turn left and head south on Military Trail to Spanish River Boulevard – turn left and head east on Spanish River Boulevard for roughly ½ mile – turn left into the parking lot of the Boca Raton Spanish River Library (1501 NW Spanish River Blvd.) – look for a white county truck to locate the volunteer meeting area (far west side of the parking lot to keep the library entrance open for library patrons).
Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, sneakers or hiking boots. We will be moving through saw palmetto, so be prepared for some “crashing and bashing” through the woods. Restroom facilities are available inside the library. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register.
