OCR Hosting 2010 High School Player Development Program in Pahokee

For immediate release: June 24, 2010
Contact: Houston Tate, 233-5303

Through the efforts of the Office of Community Revitalization (OCR), Palm Beach County is hosting the National Guard’s 2010 High School Player Development (HSPD) program. This two-day event will be held June 25 and 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Pahokee Parks & Recreation Athletic Complex, 360 E. Main Street in Pahokee. Participating schools are Glades Central High School and Pahokee Middle/High School.

The program includes personal and professional development, life skills and college-preparation, and a non-contact football tournament. Participants learn study skills, time management, anger management, decision-making and transferable skills that can be used in football and ultimately life, such as responsibility, teamwork, goal-setting, communication, dedication and discipline.

Upon completion of this program, all teams/players are eligible to compete in the NFL 7-on-7 national tournament. The NFL and the National Guard are providing all materials and supplies. Food and refreshments will be provided by the Boys & Girls Club.

This program attracts gifted high school athletes who compete in 16 regional 7-on-7 tournaments for the chance to represent an NFL market. Each team consists of 10-12 players and two coaches, with seven players on the field at a time. The games are 20 minutes long with a three-minute halftime. The last two minutes of each half are played in real time.

To volunteer or for more information, please contact OCR Director Houston Tate at 233-5303.
