The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council (TCRPC) to receive a $1million Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grant.
In partnership with Palm Beach County, TCRPC will conduct environmental site assessments in primary focus areas including Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay, and the Westgate/Belvedere Homes Community Redevelopment Agency. Additionally, TCRPC will develop cleanup and public health monitoring plans and community outreach activities to help expedite redevelopment of these high-unemployment areas.
A brownfield site is real property where the expansion, redevelopment or re-use may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help communities around the country cleanup and revitalize brownfield sites. Under this law, the EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through competitive grant programs.
Palm Beach County’s Economic Development Office collaborates with TCRPC on site-specific projects and funding opportunities to promote growth in business development and to increase job opportunities in the county.
