PBC Cooperative Extension to Host Workshop on Africanized Honeybees

For immediate release: July 5, 2006
Contact: PBC Cooperative Extension Service 561-233-1715

News reporters are invited to attend a workshop on Thursday, July 6, on Africanized honeybees, or so-called “killer bees.” Africanized honeybees have established a foothold in Palm Beach County and are here to stay, representing a very real safety threat in the workplace and urban settings.

To better understand where these aggressive bees are likely to establish a hive and how to protect yourself in the event of an attack, the Cooperative Extension Service is hosting this workshop on July 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Clayton E. Hutcheson Agricultural Service Center, 559 N. Military Trail.

The workshop will provide an overview of the differences between gentle, domestic honey-producing bees and aggressive Africanized honeybees, both in their biology and swarming behaviors. Safety issues, emergency procedures, and appropriate first-aid responses will also be addressed.
