Commissioner Unveils New County Signage
On Saturday, July 18, County Commissioner Steven L. Abrams and the Parks and Recreation Department unveiled new signage at Gulfstream Park in Gulf Stream discouraging the disposal of cigarette butts on county-operated beaches. Local city officials also attended the event which was held in conjunction with a beach cleanup by the Sand Sifters, an organization of over 1,000 volunteers dedicated to keeping our beaches clean. Commissioner Abrams said, “Installing these new signs will discourage beachgoers from littering their ‘butts’ on the beaches. Public awareness is an important measure in reducing hazards, such as litter, that threaten our coastal environment.” The county has also installed cigarette receptacles in conjunction with the new signs. In addition to Gulfstream Park, the signs and receptacles have been installed at three other beachfront parks: Ocean Inlet in Boynton Beach, Ocean Ridge Hammock in Ocean Ridge and South Inlet in Boca Raton.
