Commissioner Vana Cuts Ribbon at Solid Waste Authority South County Transfer StationOn June 24, 2011, Solid Waste Authority (SWA) Chair Commissioner Shelley Vana along with District Commissioner Aaronson joined SWA Executive Director Mark Hammond and members of COBWRA, Delray Alliance and West Boca Community Council in cutting the ribbon to open the new transfer station in western Delray. “As a county commissioner and a science teacher, I am happy that we are able to open a new transfer station that will enable the county to provide economical service to our customers as well as provide beneficial effects to the environment. It is inspiring to see our community move forward together to make Palm Beach County a great place to live." The Solid Waste Authority anticipates that benefits of the new facility will include the reduction of overall fuel consumption by an estimated 700,000 gallons per year and the prevention of the production of over 15,000,000 pounds of CO2 each year. Commercial customers in unincorporated service area 7 will see a 15 percent reduction in their collection rates immediately upon the opening of the facility. Residential customers will see the same reduction on their October 1, 2011 tax bill. An additional service offered at the site will be a facility for the drop-off of household hazardous waste. It will provide a more convenient way for environment-minded citizens to dispose of hazardous materials free of charge.
