Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. Announces Locations for the 21st Annual International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 16, 2006
For Release on: August 16, 2006
For information contact: Ginny Powell, 561-233-2452
Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. (KPBCB) is pleased to announce the dates for the 21st annual International Coastal Cleanup on September 16, 2006. The cleanup has grown into a major worldwide event sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and coordinated locally in Palm Beach County by KPBCB. In 2005, more than 450,000 international volunteers lent a hand to clean up litter and marine debris from the shores, lakes, canals and rivers of nearly 74 nations, from Argentina to United Kingdom. Last September, some 3,500 Palm Beach County volunteers picked up nearly 30,000 pounds of debris, including the usual items such as plastic and Styrofoam debris and cigarette butts, as well as more unusual items like glow sticks, toothbrushes, florescent light bulbs, couch cushions, golf clubs and balls, boat debris and an actual stove.
Inland areas and neighborhoods are also encouraged to participate as litter gets into our waterways from storm drains, polluting the marine environment. For a list of sites, dates, and times, please visit www.keepPBCbeautiful.org or call (561) 686-6646. Community Service Hours will be given. Pre-registration is suggested by contacting the volunteer coordinators for each site. Trash bags and other supplies will be provided; volunteers are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes and bring water. Free commemorative t-shirts will be given to volunteers while supplies last. Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management will sponsor two local cleanup sites:
- Southern Blvd. Causeway/Lake Worth Lagoon co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Audubon Society of the Everglades and Lagoon Keepers.Org. For more information contact Ginny Powell at 561/233-2452 or Cristina Llorens at 561/681-6605.
- Lake Osborne in the Chain of Lakes System. For more information contact Ann Mathews at 233-2426.
