The program provides swimming lessons during school hours for all kindergarten and first-graders. According to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office, nine percent of all drowning incidents that occur in the County take place in the Glades area. With drowning being the second leading cause of unintentional injuries for ages one through 14, the Drowning Prevention Coalition has taken a pro-active approach to preventing water-related injuries by implementing the “Schools and Pools” pilot program. Over a four-week time period, approximately 160 kindergarten and first-graders will receive six or seven 35-minute swimming lessons. Upon successful completion of their swimming lessons, Principal Peggy Back-Nelson will provide an ice cream/cake party on Oct. 9 when students will receive special certificates for their participation.
