County Launches 2010 Census Public Information Campaign

For immediate release: September 16, 2009
Contact: Public Affairs, 355-2754

The U.S. Census is conducted every 10 years with the goal of counting every person living in the United States. An accurate count is essential in terms of distributing of more than $400 billion in federal funds each year. The data is also used to create new congressional seats, redraw existing election district boundaries, and determine what public services and programs are most needed and where.

In March, census questionnaires will be delivered to U.S. households. All residents are expected to fill out the survey accurately and return it promptly. It should take you no more than 10 or 15 minutes.

To help citizens understand their role and responsibilities, Palm Beach County has launched a comprehensive public awareness and outreach campaign. It will include the formation of an official complete count committee, public service announcements and special events throughout the county. For details or to get involved, please click on the red U.S. Census countdown box.

The U.S. Census Bureau has endorsed the county’s recently adopted Census Partner Public Information Plan. Members of the steering committee include county staffers and its Glades area liaison, as well as representatives of the League of Cities, the Palm Beach County School District, the United Way, and the Urban League.

Federal law requires everyone’s participation in the 2010 Census and protects all personal information. Please do your part – the more accurate the count, the more federal dollars will be received for local programs and services.
