BCC Briefs

At the October 17, 2006, Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board took the following action:

Lake Worth Beach – approved an interlocal agreement with the City of Lake Worth for an amount not to exceed $5 million in voter-approved recreation bond funds for public improvements to the Lake Worth Municipal Beach. The project will benefit public use of the beach by providing needed upgrades, renovations and additions to public facilities.

PBIA Parking – approved leases with the Palm Beach Kennel Club to provide additional airport parking if needed during the peak holiday travel season (November 15 to January 31) for 2006 and 2007 for a cost of $12,500 each year. While the new parking garage is being constructed, shuttle transportation will be provided from this overflow lot to the airport.

Riverfront Natural Area – agreed to purchase three acres of land along the Loxahatchee River from Whitesell, et al, at a purchase price of $3.6 million, and instructed staff to look at possible recreational uses of the property before proceeding with a site plan.

Traffic Fines – adopted an ordinance to increase the surcharge from $3 to $5 for each civil traffic penalty. These funds go toward providing student driver education programs in schools.

Waterfront Tax Deferral – recommended motion to advertise for public hearing on November 21, 2006 an ordinance that would grant an ad valorem tax deferral to owners of recreational and commercial working waterfronts, if the owners are actively operating, rehabilitating or renovating those properties.

Five-Year Road Program – recommended motion on preliminary reading and advertised for public hearing on Monday, November 13, 2006 an ordinance establishing an amended Five-Year Road Program, containing a listing of proposed projects for the next five years.

Family Day Care – agreed to retain the current County regulation that the maximum number of children that can be cared for in permitted Family Day Care facilities is five. State law allows a maximum of 10 children.

Dubois Park in Jupiter – as recommended by the County’s Historic Resources Review Board, the Board adopted a resolution to include the DuBois Park Historic District in the Palm Beach County Register of Historic Places.
