Contact: Elena Escovar, Planning Section Phone: 561-233-3621

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, through the Housing and Community Development Dept. (HCD), is partnering with local nonprofit agencies to provide assistance to homeless families and individuals, and those who are at risk of becoming homeless.

HCD receives and administers Emergency Shelter Grant Program (ESGP) annual funds from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development.  The FY 2010-11 funding for homeless assistance is being awarded to the following eight nonprofit agencies:

Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches, Inc. $30,461
Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc. $30,000
Children’s Case Management Organization $24,000
Children’s Home Society of Florida, Inc. $21,404
The Lord’s Place, Inc. (Family Shelter) $25,835
The Lord’s Place Men’s Recovery Center $25,835
Salvation Army $32,712
Urban League of Palm Beach County $10,000

These local agencies will be providing emergency shelter and food vouchers, crisis intervention, counseling services, and emergency rent and utility payments to prevent eviction or termination of service.  It is estimated that approximately 1,028 at-risk and currently homeless individuals will be assisted as a result of these grant awards.

Working in cooperation with the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development, HCD is dedicated to alleviate homelessness through a community-based process.  Using public-private partnerships, HCD facilitates a comprehensive response to the different needs of homeless individuals and families.  Accordingly, these funds will benefit multiple homeless populations including veterans, pregnant mothers and their babies, youth, as well as victims of domestic violence requiring emergency shelter and/or transitional housing.

For more information, please contact HCD Director Edward Lowery at 561-233-3600.
