Main Library Holds Reopening CelebrationThe Main Library on Summit Boulevard reopened on Sept. 24 with an early morning ribbon cutting. The day-long festivities included refreshments, a children’s program featuring Pumpkin Patty, hourly story times and crafts in the children’s area, teen gaming in the computer lab, and a library bazaar. During the bazaar, more than 300 people visited booths to learn about programs and services. Patrons checked out 3,796 items, with 65 percent of them using the new self-check system. Eighty-six new library cards were issued, and 56 expired cards were renewed. The library was closed for about a year for renovations that included new roofing, air-conditioning and upgraded wiring, relocation of the information desk, a new teen area, installation of automated sorting equipment, a family restroom in the children’s area and comfortable seating areas throughout the building. The casual, elegant décor creates a beautiful library and highlights the large collection and special services the Main Library provides to both the neighborhood and the county. The lobby features an Art in Public Places installation by Suzi K. Edwards. The colorful mosaic titled “Books on a Library Floor” includes Byzantine glass and porcelain tile. The artwork is inspired by the “unswept floor mosaics,” popularized in Italy during the fourth and fifth centuries, that included bits of food dropped on the floor by diners. They appeared in many countries and continents during the six centuries of the Roman Empire. The day’s events attracted former as well as new customers to the library. Staff and patrons alike were happy to return to their library. Follow the Palm Beach County Library System on Facebook and Twitter.
