Morikami Welcomes Renowned Zen Master Shodo Harada to Illustrate Traditional Art of CalligraphyTake a stroke on the elegant side as the Morikami Museum invites you to learn the beautiful and harmonic written art form of calligraphy. Zen Master Shodo Harada will demonstrate the traditional art of Zen calligraphy and explain the meaning behind each stroke in a one-hour demonstration on Tuesday, October 25. Presentations will be at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Morikami’s Seishin-an Tea House. Shodo Harada Roshi (Roshi meaning “master”) was born in 1940 and is heir to the teachings of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. With just a brush and ink, the traditional tools of calligraphy, Harada Roshi will demonstrate by writing Zen sayings and explain their meanings. “We are so pleased to have the opportunity to host Harada Roshi and his master-level professional instruction of Japanese calligraphy,” said Reiko Nishioka, Morikami director of education. “This unique program will be the first of its kind to be offered in South Florida.” Harada Roshi is the author of two books on Zen training published in English, Morning Dewdrops of the Mind, and The Path to Bodhidharma. One of his scrolls is in the Morikami Museum's Zenmi- A Taste of Zen Masters current exhibit along with numerous examples of his master Yamada Mumon. Harada Roshi's original calligraphy works and Moon by the Window: the Calligraphy and Zen Insights of Shodo Harada will be on sale at the demonstration.
